Meet Curt Scarborough

Dr. Curt Scarborough is the designer and writer of the FreeWay and Peacemaker curricula. He is the former president of FreeWay Foundation. Dr Curt was born in Benton, Illinois in 1935. The son of a coal miner, he earned undergraduate and professional degrees from Southern Illinois University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D., Communications, from Columbia Pacific University.

Dr. Scarborough ministered in churches in Illinois, Texas, and Missouri for 21 years before joining the Christian Civic Foundation (CCF) in 1975 as director of education. He was promoted to president of CCF in 1983, continuing as CEO of FreeWay Foundation when it was created in October, 2001 from the merger of CCF with DATE (Drug Alcohol Tobacco Education, Inc.), which also did business as "FreeWay Project". He retired as President of FreeWay Foundation in 2007.

FreeWay Foundation provides addiction- and violence-prevention programs and materials to secular audiences (public schools and community organizations) and Christian-based audiences (churches and other private groups). Dr. Scarborough also serves as Chancellor of FreeWay Foundation’s educational affiliate, Pillsbury College & Seminary, offering distance-learning bachelor's, master’s and doctoral degree programs for mid-career ministers.

Additionally, Dr. Scarborough has served in many civic and volunteer roles, including as executive director of the American Council on Alcohol Problems. He has authored more than 40 books, including FreeWay curricula (6 volumes), Peacemaker curricula (3 volumes), and Personal & Practical Bible Study materials (5 volumes). For many years he wrote a weekly column, "Drug Quiz," which was syndicated in more than 2,400 newspapers throughout the U.S. Hundreds of his essays, feature articles, and short stories have been published in national monthlies and scientific journals.

Curt and his wife, Ruthann, make their home in St. Charles, Missouri. They are the proud parents of two married children, grandparents of seven grandchildren, and devoted caregivers to a rescued retired racing greyhound named Dolly.
