"FreeWay" Drug Prevention Curriculum

The teacher could convert this learning activity into a game by preparing in advance a "deck of cards" by sticking name tags ("Hello! My name is . . .") onto 4 by 6 file cards. One of the "labels" listed below would be printed on each card . Feel free to use additional labels/insults that are more familiar to your students.

Students would be told that "labeling" is another word for name-calling, which is a form of verbal violence. Labeling is "out-of-bounds" because it could hurt a person’s feelings.

Students are instructed to come to the front of the classroom and pick a card from the deck which is lying face down on the teacher’s desk. Each student is asked to respond to the following questions:
1. How would you feel if someone called you by that label?

2. Why would it make you feel that way?
